About

Hi there! Thanks for checking out DejaLu (or Déjà Lu, the accents feel more natural to French me, but I'm not sure if that's the best idea for an app name). Reading books in foreign languages has been one of my special interests since I was a teenager. I still remember going through The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells with dictionary, pen, and paper in hand during a summer in England where I had been sent to practice. Ever since, I have learned to various degrees German, Spanish, Polish, Latin, and even tried ancient Greek, Japanese, and Mandarin for a minute each. Over the course of a few decades, I have used countless apps, but never found one that hit the right note for me. No matter how much time and effort I put into learning the grammar, how to decline nouns, and so on, it always felt daunting to go from the basic teachings of an app like Duolingo to reading a full book.

DejaLu is my attempt at filling this gap. I think of it as the "second" (or third, fourth, ...) app for a language learner. As such, it is barebone (also because I didn't want to use any AI generated content). To be honest, the Anki app has been my loyal companion through my learning experiences, it is free, and you could totally replicate the value of DejaLu by creating your own deck in it. Go Anki! My promise is simple: DejaLu will teach you exactly the vocabulary and turns of phrase you need to read your specific target book.

I hope you enjoy DejaLu, and feel free to message me if you have any complaint or recommendation.

F.
